There is nothing better than getting lost in the pages of a book and going on a magical adventure with only your imagination as company. No matter how young our children are, we at Greenland strive to instil a love of reading for pleasure in them. We have teamed up with Catherine Millar from Reading For Pleasure and together we are working to raise the profile of reading across school, encouraging our children to read for pleasure wherever and whenever the can.
As part of the initiative, we have planned to hold regular whole school events, the first of these events, took place on Friday 5th July . An assembly was held for the whole school, all staff were asked to bring along their favourite book and pitch their chosen book to the children for 30 seconds. After staff had made their pitch, the children decided which teacher they would like to read with. Staff then took the children to various places in and around school to share their book with the children. Mr Armstrong even managed to take his group into the woods and made Harry Potter wands and broomsticks! Mr Stewart, shared his favourite book – the Hobbit and Mrs Huntrod read one of her own short stories- the children were very impressed; the next JK Rowling perhaps? All the children and staff alike had a fun-filled, enjoyable morning and were excited talking about books.
As a way to recommend books to their peers, children were asked to enter a book competition, to complete a book review on their favourite book. The winners will each receive a book of their choice, kindly donated by the staff. Watch this space for the winners..!
The aim of this activity was to get the children talking and enthused about books and it is also very important that they see adult role models reading and enjoying books, as research shows that the children are more likely to read if they see adults reading.
Over the summer holidays, we are also holding another reading competition – ‘Reading takes you places’. We would like your help and support to take photos of the children reading in any weird, wonderful and exciting places across the holidays and upload them onto our school Facebook page. The most weird and wonderful will win a book prize.
Every upload must include #greenies❤reading
Thank you for your continued support in helping your children foster a love of reading!
